Sigma Notation:
https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/sigma-calculator.html - This site allows you to input sigma notation for a sequence and calculates your answer for you, showing you what each term should be and what you are adding together.
- Σ = Uppercase Greek LEtter Sigma
- In Maths Σ means "the sum of..."
- (5 Σ r=1) 2r = 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 30. This means:
- 5 is the finishing value of r and should be written on top of the sigma sign.
- r=1 is the starting value of r and should be written underneath the sigma sign.
- 2r is the rule for the sequence you want to calculate sigma for.
- 30 is the series for the first 5 terms of the sequence 2r.
- A series is a sum of a sequence.
Examples:
Evaluate (5 Σ r=2) r² + 7
11 + 16 + 23 + 32 = 82 |
Evaluate (10 Σ r=5) 10 - 2r
0 - 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 - 10 = -30 |
